Quartermaine's Terms

18–26 November. Quartermaine’s Terms by Simon Gray.

The time is the 1960s—the place, the Cull-Loomis School of English for Foreigners near Cambridge. The characters—the principal and staff of the school, each with their own particular family, career and relationship problems, which they bear with varying degrees of stoicism. And at the play’s still, calm centre is St John Quartermaine, a vague and woefully inept teacher who seems to exist only within the campus and solely in relation to his colleagues. Sad if it weren’t so funny—funny if it weren’t so sad. In his funny, moving and perceptive chronicle of the problems, aspirations and disappointments of the group, Simon Gray skilfully creates an almost Chekhovian atmosphere.

In today’s world, the pace of change and newness is giddying. Not so in the staff room of a language school inhabited by an old-world paternalistic “family” of teachers which is being turned around with the inevitability of a slowly turning thing.

Review and development plan meeting

Saturday 14 January at 10.30 am

For the past six months, the various departments of the theatre have been shaping our “road map” showing what our targets are, how we are going to reach them and what it will cost. The impetus for creating a new plan was to build on what has already been achieved, the knowledge that we must survive by our own efforts and the passionate desire to ensure that the Stables continues to succeed for another 50 years.

The plan can be downloaded from our website. This will be a “live” document that can be amended in the course of time.

This meeting is your opportunity to be part of the future of the Stables, knowing what we have planned and contributing to those plans yourself.

10–18 February. Entertaining Angels by Richard Everett.

Since the death of her husband, the local vicar, Grace’s rather cosy world has fallen apart and she is going through a crisis of faith. Secure routines have begun to unravel and, although there is now a certain enjoyment in her a
new-found freedom to do and say exactly as she pleases, Grace still remains shaken by events: “… I’ve made four thousand six hundred medium-sized quiches and personally baked two tons of light crust pastry. And what for?”

This 12-minute video presentation (without sound) has been prepared by Martin Robinson on behalf of the review group, incorporating photographs by Peter Mould. It celebrates the contribution made by so many people in the past year and gives the review group’s judgement of the nominees and winners for the best performances (on and off stage) in several categories. It is the closest we come to an awards ceremony.

Entertaining Angels

10–18 February. Entertaining Angels by Richard Everett.

Since the death of her husband, the local vicar, Grace’s rather cosy world has fallen apart and she is going through a crisis of faith. Secure routines have begun to unravel and, although there is now a certain enjoyment in her a new-found freedom to do and say exactly as she pleases, Grace still remains shaken by events: “… I’ve made four thousand six hundred medium-sized quiches and personally baked two tons of light crust pastry. And what for?”

Sponsor our sponsor

Dain Jensen, director of Kiley’s Karpets, will be running in the London Marathon in aid of MSRC, a multiple-sclerosis research charity.

Dain’s company is a major sponsor of our theatre. Over the years Dain and Kiley’s Karpets have been generous with their financial and material support to help keep the show on the road at our theatre. You can see their handiwork on the floor of the recently refurbished Stables bar. If you would like to show a tangible sign of your appreciation for this generosity, please consider sponsoring Dain’s marathon run.

Council of management

Our annual general meeting will be held on Tuesday 27 March. A new council of management for the coming year will be elected, and we thought we would give you advance notice that several members of the current council will reach the end of their terms of office and will be stepping down. If you would like to be more involved in the running of the theatre, now is the time to start thinking whether this is the role for you. We suggest that you speak to one of the current council members to find out what being a director of the Stables Trust involves. It would be great to see new people joining this team: active volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, wishing to guide the future of our beloved theatre and arts centre.

Calling all architects and designers

At the start of next year we hope to be in a position to redevelop the theatre box office, the two downstairs foyers and the adjacent areas. We welcome the suggestions of any members on how best to do this but would particularly like to find architects or designers among our members who could advise us on this. Please contact us if you would like to help.
